Microsoft’s Best Presents At NANOG55 Event - by Guest Blogger - Petr Lapukhov

North American Network Operator Group, or NANOG, is an open forum bringing together network engineers from the US/Canada’s largest Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and enterprises. The main goals of NANOG meetings are exchanging ideas, presenting designs, giving tutorials, learning new things, and sharing operational experience. The event is very popular among network operators, and gathers hundreds of people three times a year. You can meet people from the industry leading companies, such as ours and other loud names (Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Twitter) and large ISP’s such as Level3 Networks. In addition to technical content, every meeting includes social events, giving participants chance to build connections and peer with colleagues.

The recent NANOG55 event was in Vancouver BC, and there were nearly 30 Microsoft folks in attendance, most of them from Global Networking Services department (GNS). We delivered two talks on the work we have done for Online Services Department (OSD). Petr Lapukhov (Petr’s Talk) presented the large-scale data center routing design we leverage for Microsoft online services such as Bing, Ad Center, MSN portals and so on. Those environments present unique challenges as they have a large-scale server footprint. You can follow and engage with Petr on twitter @petrlapu. The other presentation came from GNS core engineering team and was delivered by Vijay Gill (Vijay’s Talk) and David Schmidt. It talks about the software system GNS uses for automated network device configuration management and verification. Both topics are very hot in the networking industry, and highly interesting to network operators who grow their infrastructure. You can follow and engage with Vijay Gill on twitter @vgill.  Though Microsoft is occasionally criticized for being too closed and protective of its “secrets,” the reality is that we are fully open to sharing our ideas and experiences with the broad networking community.  The Global Foundation Services Team will be hosting a recruiting event in Redmond, Washington from July 23 thru July 27, 2012 (travel & accommodations for qualified applicants included).
